How to style the celebration table

As the season of celebrations arrive and our diaries fill with social events again (hopefully) here we share our top tips on creating a great tablescape whatever your style.

THE EASTER TABLE

Spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation, so adding colour to your home is a simple way to mimic what’s happening in nature and what better way than with an Easter table. Skip the usual pastels in favour of bold and bright colours that celebrate this time. You can mix and match spring flowers and add an assortment of spring-appropriate hues and textures in tableware to show off your creativity. Mix colourful glassware and crockery and finish with different size vases and bright candles. Natural linen napkins and a decorative Easter touch like a stack of eggs will complete the look.

THE SPECIAL OCCASION TABLE

Whether it’s an engagement party, baptism, or graduation the special occasion table should be glamourous, classic, and elegant. Neutral tones, simple flowers with classic glassware and crockery will suit this event. Go for beautiful weighty cutlery with shine as it adds so much to the dining experience and instantly feels more exclusive. Glassware should be in classic styles to add instant simplicity and a sense of occasion. You don’t want to overcrowd this table, so the finishing touches should also have clean lines. Candle votives in glass or metal will look sophisticated and will mark the occasion beautifully.

THE BIRTHDAY TABLE

With this type of occasion, you can literally do anything when it comes to styling your table. But sometimes less is more, and you simply add the detail with selected items and use colour to set the mood, especially if you have a great table you want to show off.
Think candy floss pink, baby blues, peach, and lilac. These shades definitely come into their own as we approach spring and who doesn’t love a hit of colour after the dark winter months. The beauty of this table is that you can mix and match your pastels. There are literally no rules, so you get to have fun. For the crockery mix and match bright bowls, plates, and serving platters and if these have small details, like an embossed pattern on the side, it will add another subtle detail into the mix. For the standout piece add a statement vase with a simple stem of foliage or flower.

Top styling tips for tablescaping

+  Plan, prep and make it pretty. Take the time to plan your table. Get everything out and lay it on the floor. Think about the colours, textures, flowers, what food you will be serving. Get out the napkins, write place cards and other table decorations, then you can see what it looks like altogether and if you are missing anything.

+ Build the table in layers. First add the tablecloth, then any flowers or greenery or candles. Next add the crockery and then glassware. Candlelight is essential as there’s nothing more beautiful than setting the mood with a warm light.

+ Now is the time to add napkins. They can be simply folded, tied, or relaxed knots, whatever you feel like doing these will also set the tone. If you are doing place cards, then you need to think about those too. It will personalise the experience and create a sense of intimacy.

+ Create something special with the little things. Small objects that you wouldn’t normally find on a table can add an unexpected detail and element of surprise, which makes it fun. But keep it simple, don’t over clutter it either.

+ Always use unscented candles to avoid a clash with the smell and flavour of the food.

+ Take a good look at your table and check it over. Does every place setting have everything it needs? Is it looking the way you want it to? Check quietly and calmly before guests arrive!

How to ensure your party is a hit

+ Preparation is the key, so you don’t end up flustered when the guests arrive. This means do as much food prep as you can, obviously lay the table and get a few feel-good-playlists together when you’re in party planning mode. Leaving anything to the last minute will just add stress and it will show on your face.

+ Consider your numbers. If you want a good catch up, going over four people can be challenging, but if you want more then introduce games into the occasion and then it makes the flow more fun, and you will avoid certain people dominating the conversation.

+ Know your guests and seat them properly as at the end of the day it will make the party work. You want to give everyone the best seat for them. Never put couples together, or best friends. You could even switch seating with each course as that really gets people moving and talking.

+ Consider your menu. Whether you opt for simple or complicated, sharing-style platters are always a good choice as they bring in maximum effect with minimal effort and everyone can help themselves to however much food they want.
