A lot of terms are used in the textile industry to highlight products that are better for the environment and the people. Sustainable, ethical, fair, transparent, environmentally friendly are a few of them. While some claims like “sustainable fashion” are more holistic than “ethical clothing” or “fair production”, that refer only to the social conditions of production and not the environmental ones, all of them ultimately try to depict better productions.
Those words should be looked at very carefully, as they can be a sign of true efforts or greenwashing.
To avoid falling into greenwashing, always make sure that claims like sustainable fashion, ethical clothing or fair production are explained. Every brand should explain in detail what they mean when they use those terms, so that anyone, including yourself as a customer, is able to check whether their definition of sustainable, ethical or fair is in line with your values.
