Fashion’s sportiest trend ‘Blokecore’ is still a hot fashion style amongst athletes. Here we go behind the scenes with the women’s Danish handball team, to find out what they like to wear off-court and how important it is for them to look and feel great.

Pitch perfect

Fashion’s sportiest trend ‘Blokecore’ is still a hot fashion style amongst athletes. Here we go behind the scenes with the women’s Danish handball team, to find out what they like to wear off-court and how important it is for them to look and feel great.

When hanging out with the team off-court, it's clear how they like to show off their sense of style. Even though they are dedicated, passionate sportswomen whose life is very much handball, they love to mix elements of their sports uniform with fashion. “I just love combining the two because it’s a bit edgier, skater almost and I feel so comfortable and confident wearing it,” says player Mie Hojlund, who prefers sports clothes off the court too.

But this isn’t any old-fashioned trend amongst athletes this is what you call Blokecore, which was coined by Brandon Huntly on TikTok back in December 2021 and is used to describe a particular aesthetic mood where the look is composed of a vintage football shirt (in this case handball shirt), jeans, and sneakers.

While the concept may seem basic, sportswear has become increasingly of interest within the fashion space. So what makes Blokecore a trend rather than simply wearing a jersey for your team? It celebrates the ordinary yet iconic fashion sense of everyday wear. ‘It's just great street style and I love that you can mix different styles, like loose sports clothes with jeans. It makes the outfit edgy and is a great combination,’ adds Mie.

So how do you wear it? Of course, TikTok and Instagram offer an array of outfit inspiration for those interested in trying their hand at the sporty trend, but here are the basics. First, you’ll need a sports jersey, whether it be from your favourite team, and pair it with jeans, sneakers, or trousers like the girls are wearing here. ‘It's quite basic, but it suits me when I mix the team shirt with oversized denim jeans and sneakers. I then add a bit of jewelry to style it up but I always feel so comfortable and cool,’ says player Andrea Hansen who likes to mix this fashion trend with her other outfits.

But why not experiment with a skirt and sneakers going into summer? There may be rules on the court, but anything is fair game on the streets. ‘I think it's important for my self-esteem to feel good outside the court. I wear more sports fashion and casual clothes than dresses as I like to be comfortable,’ says Trine Ostergaard, who doesn’t wear her jersey off the court, but still prefers the sportier look of oversized jeans, a sweatshirt, and sneakers.

Outside the court has become more than just a platform for sports teams to express their individuality before changing into their work uniforms. What they look like off-court connects them to their existing fans, engages new ones, and boosts their social platforms. After all, while they are amazing handball players they still love to look great off-court.

The last word….

Beauty routine: It is simple. I always play with a slick bun with lots of hairspray to keep the hair out of the way. It’s a style that I would wear on and off the court.

What do you eat: I eat things that give me energy like oats for breakfast, eggs, and sometimes pancakes.

Workout routine: I go to the gym a lot. We have a personal trainer for our team, who has helped me gain weight which has been one of my problems, and he has helped me. Outside my training sessions, I love to run with my dog in the woods.

Beauty routine: When I am not playing I wear my hair loose and straight but otherwise it's up in a ponytail as of course, I need to have hair all up out of the way.

What do you eat: Eggs, cheese, chicken, lots of protein and pasta, I love lasagna. I like to start the day with oats, topped with apple and lunch is a smorboard.

Workout routine: During the week it's running and strength training. Usually four sessions a week each. I also love to play padel and go for long runs outside. I just love cardio.

Beauty routine: I don’t wear much makeup on the court, just a skin tint like a BB or CC cream. But out of court I always do my brows, add some blush and bronzer. I wear the same hairstyle, a tied knot or bun.

What do you eat: Before a game it's often pasta, as carbs are good for my energy. After a game, I eat lots of protein to get the body in a good place. For breakfast it's oatmeal, for lunch, I like to eat eggs with avocado and bread and in the evening it's pasta, I love Italian food.

Workout routine: I go to the gym in the morning where we have our special gym program that’s typical squad training, arm and core exercises. Afternoons are handball training. I love yoga and would love to do it more but I prefer cardio training because of the player that I am. I love to be strong.
