How to dress right for the Nordic weather

Few things are as unpredictable as Nordic weather. While the forecast runs hot and cold (just like the tinder boys in your dm) it’s essential to master the art form of preparation and protection. But don’t fret, you can still look fashionable while remaining practical.

Come rain or shine

Certain days are a little more fickle than others. We’re talking about the days ruled by non-stop weather changes – one minute sunshine and one minute rain. The best way to combat this is by wearing layers. When combining lightweight separates you can dress and undress according to the temperature. Wear a short dress with a water-resistant jacket and a pair of rain boots, or throw on a cool jumpsuit with sneakers and a baseball cap.

PS. Don’t forget to pack a small umbrella and a pair of sunglasses.

Moody winds

Thanks to the current athleisure trend it’s hotter than ever to wear practical sportswear, from ”fast shades” to crisp wind jackets. Aim for textures that hug the body, such as jeans, sports tights, or cargo pants (avoid anything too flowy), and add a solid wind jacket on top. Add a pair of sneakers with a good grip so you don’t get blown away in the storm.

Baby it’s cold outside

As the temperature drops, it can be a challenge knowing how to dress in the morning, but there are ways to keep stylish despite the constant threat of hypothermia. Rule of thumb: layers. The key is to be intentional with the fabrics you choose. Opt for wool, fleece, and water-resistant, insulated coats and boots. For those who don’t want to go sporty to endure the cold, invest in a statement fake fur and accessorize it with leather gloves, boots, and a knitted beret.

Alpine chic

Alpine fashion is not just for the yearly Val-d'Isère vacationers. It’s for anyone who will encounter snow. Step 1: invest in a cozy, knitted sweater (turtleneck, cardigan, or wool blend). Step 2: Ski pants. Step 3: Ski jacket or puffer jacket - this piece will be your best friend throughout the winter months. Make sure it’s water resistant, heat-insulated, and stylish. Step 4: Winter boots (same rules as step 3). Step 5: Alpine accessories. Even if you’re not hitting the slopes, you can still dress the part with a knitted pom pom beanie, balaclava, ski-inspired sunglasses, and proper shell mittens.
