With these five hair fixes you can easily add volume to your hair. From the right haircut, to styling tricks and products you’ll be able to give your hair a volume boost in no time.
Use the right shampoo
If you have thin, fine hair, then you should avoid creamy shampoos as they will just weigh the hair down. Opt for a volumising shampoo instead as they pep up the thickness with their volume boosting ingredients. Make sure your conditioner is labeled volumising too as they will be lighter than usual conditioners so will avoid the 3pm greases.
Invest in the correct styling
The key to voluminous hair also lies in the styling products you use. Just be careful not to overuse as they can weigh the hair down rather than lift it. Look for products labeled ‘volumising’ or ‘adds body’. For best results massage a volumsing spray or lotion into the roots of the hair when its partially dry. Now is the time to revisit mousse, as today’s formulas will thicken without making it stiff. Just work through a golf-ball sized amount from the roots down to the mid-shaft and it will plump your strands.
And hair tools
Curls are a great way to add volume and body to the hair. You can use a good curling tong or rollers, but even straightening irons used in the right way can add thickness with waves. Rough dry the hair, add mousse and then curl the hair form the roots to the ends.
It doesn’t have to be an all-out curl, just enough to create that body and lift that will make hair look lustrous. Short hair suits thin wands and curlers, whereas if you have thick long hair you should use thicker barrel tongs.
Add colour
Hair dye plumps the hair shaft just enough to give it volume. Just adding a few shades will add dimension and make it appear thicker. If you don’t want to go for an all-out colour, just add a few high or low lights here and there and it will add body and colour. Remember to use colour protecting shampoos and conditioners for colour longevity.
Get the ‘modern Diana bob’
Cutting your hair shorter will make it instantly feel thicker and add volume, even just shortening it by five centimetres will make the difference, cue the bob haircut. We’ve had the sliced, midi, blunt and A-line bob, but now it’s all about the ‘modern Diana bob’ inspired by the late Princess Diana whose beauty was bought to life via Emma Corrin on The Crown. The bob never goes out of fashion, but this one is cut to the cheekbones with layers and a side parting which will instantly add volume and is pretty low maintenance when it comes to styling. Ask for shattered edges with a short shape and invest in texture sprays as it will show the undone nature of this style and keep it relaxed.
