Heating in a microwave can cause uneven heating in the milk, which may result in severe burns in the baby's mouth (microwave heating may also alter the composition of breast milk). • Clean and sterilize all parts that come into contact with the breast and breast milk before the first use. • Only use parts recommended by Medela with your breast pump. • If it is uncomfortable or painful to pump, turn off the breast pump, release the breast shield with a finger between the breast and shield, and then remove the shield from the breast. • Even though it may feel a little uncomfortable the first time you use a breast pump, it should never hurt. If you are unsure about which breast shield size to choose, visit www.medela.com or consult a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist who can help you find the right fit. • Contact healthcare personnel or a lactation specialist if you are only able to pump a little or no milk, or if the let-down is painful. • If you are pumping at a high altitude, such as on an airplane, you may want to consider pumping more frequently or for longer periods if you feel there is still milk in your breasts after pumping.
