How to have great hair every day

Who doesn’t want to have great hair every day? With these simple hair hacks, you’ll be on the right track to having the best hair day ever.

VOLUME TRICKS FOR THICKER HAIR

To help you get the extra volume to your hair, it's just a matter of styling with the right tools and product. Like push-up bras for your hair, curlers, and rollers will bring your hair to new heights. To prep, dampen hair with a few spritzes of water. Next press a golf-ball size squirt of mousse through random chunks of hair, then roll them up using eight to 12 curlers. Make sure you roll the hair at the crown away from your face. Once you have made your way around your head, set it with heat, or let it air dry for 30 minutes, and remove rollers and finger comb. Texture spray worked into the hair before blow drying will help to give your hair an instant lift. A curling iron is another tool that’s great for giving curling hair a lift. Spritz with a heat protector and spiral wrapping a 2.5-centimetre section around a wide-barrel tong, then open them up by combing tip to root. The result is huge curls with just enough definition.

HOW TO WASH IT PROPERLY

Washing your hair gently yet thoroughly is the best thing you can do for strength, shine, and a longer-lasting blowdry. One of the top tips for washing your hair is to make sure you have wet hands before shampooing. Why? If you wet them and create a bit of a lather before you massage shampoo into your hair, then you’ll get a better cleanse. Always wash around your hairline and into the nape of the neck because those areas always tend to be missed and you can get product buildup. Always wring your hair out before you apply conditioner as this prevents diluting the product. And, using a soft brush while the conditioner is in will gently exfoliate and lift away dead skin cells. Dry your hair using a microfibre towel as they are great at absorbing extra water, preventing you from having to vigorously rub it. A Tangle Teezer or a wet brush on just-washed hair is best as the bristles are weaker therefore less resistance when you get a knot so they’ll be less breakage.

HOW TO DO THE PERFECT BLOW DRY AND MAKE IT LAST

It would be nice to go to a salon whenever you need a perfectly smooth do, but that comes with a price tag. Instead, try this at-home version instead. Start by applying a heat-styling spray or a few drops of defrizzing oil to damp hair. Part hair into four sections (six if your hair is thick) twist and clip in place. Unravel one of the sections closest to the nape of the neck in the back. Hold your dryer with your dominant hand and use a paddle brush to pull your hair taut with your opposite hand. Follow the brush with the dryer, keeping it at least 2.5 centimetres from the hair. Repeat, working on one section at a time from the bottom up. Run your brush or fingers through the hair and mist it with hairspray and you’re done. To make it last, sleep with your hair in a high, loose bun, and use a straightening iron in the morning.

MAKE YOUR HAIR SHINY EVERY DAY

The four products that will give hair gloss are deep conditioner. Choose one with silicone to smooth down damaged hair that’s been colour-treated or overprocessed. A hair straightener will smooth the cuticle helping it to reflect the light. Always use a heat-protecting spray to smooth hair so that it looks shinier. Use an unsticky wax. It works with texture and adds shine to naturally coarse hair. Brushing your hair boosts shine by distributing your natural oils to the ends, so invest in a good one!

TRICKS TO KEEP YOUR COLOUR BRIGHT

Ditch the sulfates. If you have coloured hair, sulfates are cleansing agents that can be too aggressive on coloured hair and cause it to fade faster than normal. Instead, opt for sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners that cleanse without stripping your hair of its colour, and make sure they are the colour-protectant version. Turn down the temperature of your shower as the heat can cause the hair’s cuticle to swell and open up which can cause the colour molecules in your hair to rinse down the drain. Let your hair air dry, again you don’t want to risk opening the cuticles with heat which will allow the colour molecules to fade. Using a hair mask once a week will keep your hair moisturised and your colour looking vibrant. Reach for a mask that is formulated with hydrating ingredients like avocado, shea, and jojoba butter to keep strands soft. Wear a hat in summer as too much sun exposure can cause your hair to lighten and your current colour to fade.
