A fresh approach to toners has cast this years-old beauty liquid in a modern light. You still sweep it over your face via a cotton pad as you perhaps once did to remove the last traces of cleanser, but today’s intention is about fixing skin concerns more than squeaky clean skin. To find the right one for your skin type you must look at what your skin needs now and bear in mnd that may change with the seasons and age. For a start in your twenties, your toner or tonic as it is called these days, needs to mop up excess oil and help to shrink pores. Your thirties are all about radiance and hydration, while in your forties its time to tackle fine lines and to keep the skin moisturised.
If you choose right, your toner will become your best friend and will set the tone for the rest of your skincare routine. If you want to smooth and brighten, try an exfoliating formulation with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic or lactic acid. To reduce congestion, salicylic acid will unplug pores. To calm irritation, or if your creams and serums feature a lot of retinols or AHAs look for a soothing toner that will balance the skin’s pH. You can rotate two or three toners (strictly on different days) to cover multiple issues. A hydrating toner can always be layered over an acid one to reduce irritation the latter may cause or to lessen the possible drying effects of an anti-blemish toner. Whichever you choose, use immediately after cleansing morning and night and either spritz or splash over your face or apply with the cotton pad.
