Right function

Different activities require different features when it comes to leggings. The support you need for yoga will differ from a circuit class or a run. Take note of these key features and it will take your workout to a whole new level.

Training leggings

If you are a gym bunny then training leggings are the best choice as these types are made of functional fabrics that offer support, flexibility, stretch, and moisture management. This will not only make them more comfortable in your workout but will make sure they don’t rip or slide down during your session and keep you dry and cool. These leggings should fit well, have a waistband that suits your body, and make you look and feel good. Drawstring waists, pockets, and other technical features are small details that make the difference and create a superior fit.

Yoga leggings

Most yoga tights are made from soft, warm, figure-hugging fabrics where fit and feel needs to be comfortable allowing the freedom of movement whether you are at home or in the studio. For more stability and support go for a wide waistband and seamless to avoid chafing. You can also look for yoga leggings that are made of a blend of polyester and elastane. These provide compression around the waist for back and ab support. It is often made of double material in many areas and sweat-wicking which will help to regulate temperature in Vinyasa flow or hot yoga classes.

Running leggings

If running is your vibe, then these types of training leggings are the most technical. Materials should offer support and moisture management to help you through those long runs. Look for polyester leggings with compression and a stable, structured fit to ensure they always stay in place even during intense movement, while also supporting muscles. A drawstring in the waist, a pocket for your keys, and phone, and technical features will give a great fit. Reflective details, and wind and water-resistant fabrics will add to the comfort factor and keep you safe on those dark winter nights.

Right size

Size does matter - at least when it comes to training leggings! They should have a slim and tight fit so they stay in place during your training session and should fit comfortably, so they do not hinder your movements. Make sure that they fit you well both around your legs but also in the waist. Leggings that have a lot of stretch in them will mean you can probably squeeze in a smaller size than in regular leggings - but be careful not to go too small either. If they are too tight they may restrict you during exercise.

Waist up

Now the fit. There are three main fits to choose from, but it’s all down to comfort and personal choice and where you like the waistband to finish.

Mid-rise

Mid-rise leggings are worn around the waist and are a great blend of support and comfort. A soft wider elastic in the waistband keeps the tights in place and gives a flattering shape.

High-waisted

Usually with a 10cm waistband, these types of tights hug the body which makes them very comfortable. Worn high on the waist they provide ab and back support.

Low waisted

These are the regular waist height when it comes to training tights, but they are sometimes called low-waisted at around 5cm waistband.

Great lengths

This is down to personal preference, how tall you are, and how and where you train whether it be indoors or outside, but overall what you feel most comfortable training in.

Full length

These fall just above your trainers and are the best for colder weather, so especially good in winter.

7/8 length

This means that the leggings fall just above the ankle. Great if you have shorter legs and find the full length too long. A good all-round tight.

¾ capri

These fall to the mid-calf, perfect for a sunny run, light job, or workout. The shorter length makes them perfect for outdoor summer training.

½ length

Otherwise known as a classic bike tight these are great for summer training and give you flexibility with anything from squats to yoga.

Know your fit

Tights should feel like a second skin, comfortable and like you never want to take them off. The waistband should not be tight or too loose. You know when it’s right when you don’t feel the need to keep pulling them up or if they are too squeezy.

Slim fit

All tights should have a tight fit, but a slim fit will feel a bit more so and tighter on your body.

Compression fit

Through compression, it helps reduce muscle fatigue and increase blood flow to benefit your training. Usually made from a strong, stretchy material that forms your body and produces a tight compression mainly around the calves. Good for runners.
