How to choose the right deodorant

You might feel like the days of sweating are a long way off, but every guy needs a good deodorant when it comes to preventing BO. Here’s how to select the right one for you.

How does a deodorant work?

Bacteria can occur naturally all over the body, including under the arms. When certain types of bacteria are present on the skin, they react to proteins in sweat and create the pungent scent you associate with body odour. Deodorants contain ingredients that eliminate these smelly bacteria, freshening the underarm area, and banishing body odour for several hours or even up to a full day. Deodorants work by changing the pH of your skin to make it less hospitable for bacteria.

Roll-on deodorant

Available in a portable stick, this roll-on deodorant glides on easily in smooth liquid form that contours to your body. It dries fast and, like an aerosol, eliminates chalky or greasy residue that can leave behind noticeable streaks or ruin your favorite t-shirt. Although roll-on application is slightly slower than a spray, roll-ons tends to last longer than aerosol formulas. Since they have more of a water base, it doesn’t leave those nasty white marks!

Solid stick deodorant

Though the packaging of a solid deodorant is similar to a roll-on, the formula is typically opaque and smooth. Picture the consistency of a creamy bar of soap that's just soft enough to glide onto your armpit. To apply, simply, use up and down movements to completely cover the underarm area. These types can leave a white residue on your skin and clothes so beware.

Anti-perspirant vs deodorant

There are a few key differences between antiperspirant and deodorant. While deodorants eliminate bacteria that lead to odour, antiperspirants perform a different function. They contain ingredients such as aluminum salts that temporarily seal off the pores to prevent sweat from exiting. Using an anti-perspirant leads to less wetness as well as minimised body odour. In contrast, many deodorants contain alcohol to kill off odour-causing bacteria.

Both antiperspirant and deodorants may contain beneficial additives such as lanolin oil, to smooth and moisturise skin, and fragrance, to create a pleasing signature scent.

Spray deodorant

Ideal for quick refreshes after the gym and before happy hour this is a very wearable deodorant. If you're concerned about deodorant stains, sprays are a great choice because they go on clear without residue. Just make sure that you let the formula dry completely before dressing. To apply simply shake the can gently, remove the cap, and spray the underarm area from a distance of about 20 centimetres.
