7 Tips: How to Satisfy your Wanderlust

It isn’t exactly clear when we’ll really be able to travel again. Nonetheless, there’s a few things you can do to relieve your urge for adventure – or at least put it on hold for a while. Read on!

Many people are used to travelling at least once a year. Maybe you once skied a slalom in the Alps, took off on a long overseas adventure, explored the Middle East or soaked up the sun in Asia.

Whatever the destination, one thing’s certain. Those of us who love travelling are simply longing to fasten our seat belts and fly off to distant climes. But now that we can’t actually travel, we need to come up with something that will at least give us a sense of travel. That’s why Boozt has come up with some inspiration for what you can do to sate your hungry wanderlust, while waiting until you can visit the four corners of the world once again.

3.

Go to a restaurant

Let exquisite gastronomy transport you far away from your own hometown. The Nordic region abounds in wonderful eateries serving inspirational foreign cuisine, with a perfect blend of food and décor. Maybe you’re into Japanese food, where the hallmark is minimalist expression and an eye for detail. Or maybe whizz off on a gastronomic journey to festive, colourful Mexico, where both food and temperature are hot, hot, hot!

4.

Listen to travel podcasts

Get out your headphones and listen your way to distant lands. There’s an impressive selection of compelling travel podcasts out there. We may love to travel, but we also love listening to great podcast stories. This list features a wide selection of exotic soundscapes that provide tons of fabulous travel tips.

Boozt recommends:

/ The Travel Diaries with Holly Rubenstein. Celebrities describe travel experiences that made them who they are.

/ Zero To Travel with Jason Mooreinterviews with explorers who share their best travel tips.

/ Beach Too Sandy, Water Too Wet with Alex and Christine Schiefter. The hosts scour the Internet for 1-star reviews of travel-related services and read them aloud with a mixture of humour and drama.

2.

Immerse yourself in books set in far-off countries

Lose yourself in the magical universe of books. Be a detective in London one day, the next day a young author in New York or an explorer in Asia. There are a myriad of books set in countries throughout the world. So wrap yourself up in a warm blanket, cosy up and embark on a journey in a specially selected tale.

Boozt recommends:

/ The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley is set in Geneva and Rio de Janeiro.

/ Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer is set in vibrant New York.

/ Wild by Cheryl Strayed is set in the beautiful, yet harsh American wilderness.

5.

Learn a new language

It’ll be a while before we can go crazy again, flitting from one country to another. So, meanwhile you can practise anything from Spanish to German, Japanese or French, preparing yourself (linguistically at least) for your next holiday. The Duolingo app will get you off to a humble start, so you can toss off your broken tourist phrases on your next adventure.

6.

A themed evening with friends

Organise a cosy travel-themed evening with friends and set off to your favourite destination. The possibilities are almost infinite. Maybe invite your friends to a Greek god-and-goddess party and consume feta salad and ouzo until you drop. Of course, an all-time favourite is a Mexican night with tacos, tortilla and tequila, or a New York night sipping cocktails. If you’re after a cosy afternoon event, then serve your girlfriends English Afternoon Tea or, if you’re longing for a touch of the south, so-called Mediterranean cuisine is very popular with food lovers. The choice is yours. Our only advice is: really go for it - food-, drink-, costume- and decoration-wise.

1.

Get out those old travel photos

Even though you might have to scroll back quite a way in your digital photo album to come across great memories from your travels, it’s worth the effort. One of the best ways to rediscover that special holiday atmosphere is by looking at old holiday photos. It only takes a single photo to transport you back to snowy mountain tops, palm-clad beaches and foamy waves, outdoor adventures - you name it.

Maybe spend a morning one weekend rooting out and downloading your favourite photos and putting them in an album. That way, you’ll always have some wonderful holiday vibes at hand when the urge to travel kicks in.

7.

Plan your next trip

Although it remains to be seen when various countries will open their borders, you might as well start planning your next journey. There are an infinite number of inspirational travel blogs online featuring fascinating, personal travel stories to point you in the right direction.  Maybe you fancy a dog sled ride in the cold North, or exploring spectacular national parks in the West or a safari in the South. Or maybe a trip to the East, indulging in everything from sushi to pad Thai and fresh spring rolls, is top of your bucket list.

Don’t forget that the Lonely Planet books are also the perfect place to find travel inspiration. They provide you with information on everything - sights, nature experiences, hotels, food - you name it. Once you’ve chosen your next travel destination, just settle down and look forward to the moment when you can confidently book your flight tickets.
