During the 18th century corduroy moved down the social scale, as British textile manufacturers developed the distinctive Wales that would transform it into the corduroy we know today. The fabric was soon favoured by schoolteachers and academics, and because corduroy was considered a very strong fabric, it became popular as a material for the working men's clothing after the Industrial revolution. During the 1970s corduroy developed a fashion status, as an anti-establishment badge of a cool working-class fabric, and this status is still current today
