The men's blazer – a stylish jacket since the 19th century

It is not only in recent times that blazers have become a regular part of many men's wardrobes. The popular jacket has been around for nearly two hundred years, and throughout the years it has retained almost the same look and feel. There are many different stories about the actual origin of the blazer. Some would argue that the blazer originated in the 1820s as a result of the sports jackets worn by the rowers on the sailing team at St. John's College in Cambridge. The blazers these rowers wore were considered to be wind jackets which were supposed to keep the rowers warm out on the water. But these blazers also had another function. As they had different colors and patterns, they made it possible for spectators to distinguish the different sailing teams from each other when rowing out on the water. Later, the rowers also began to wear the jackets outside of the boats and around the university corridors which resulted in the blazers becoming a status symbol. Another story is that the crew of the ship HMS Blazer wore navy blue, double-breasted blazers when Queen Victoria visited the ship in 1837 - and because of the ship's name, the jackets were then named blazers. Although there may still be disagreement about the actual origin of the blazer, there is no doubt that this stylish jacket was and still is a popular item in many men's (and women's) wardrobes. How should the perfect blazer for men fit?

A blazer is usually looser and less structured than a formal habit jacket, which typically sits closer to the shoulders and chest. Still, there are some general rules for when a blazer actually fits perfectly. When you wear a blazer, your body must appear balanced – that is, your upper body and lower body must be well-proportioned, and therefore the blazer should go down over the waist and end around your crotch. You can also find and measure the right length by having your arms hanging in a natural position. The sleeves should end down around your wrist, and if you have a shirt on underneath, a few millimeters of the shirt sleeves should be visible. The shoulder seams should end in the same place as your shoulders do – and they should lie completely flat. It is especially important that your blazer fits well around the shoulders, as a tailor may find it difficult to fix this particular part of the jacket. You need to be able to move your arms freely and therefore the blazer should not cut into your armpits. However, be aware that a blazer is typically stiffer than many other types of jackets, so it makes sense that you may feel a bit stiffer when wearing a blazer. If you have a blazer with two buttons, keep in mind that only the top button should be buttoned and that the blazer should not be too tight when you close it.
